What is NMLS?

The Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) is the legal system of record for licensing in all participating states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories. In these jurisdictions, NMLS is the official and sole system for companies and individuals seeking to apply for, amend, renew, and surrender licenses managed in the NMLS on behalf of the jurisdiction’s governmental agencies. NMLS itself does not grant or deny license authority.

Anticipate and Prepare for Upcoming Deadlines

The deadline to complete CE is December 31. However, MLOs in California are prohibited from applying to renew their license if they have not completed CE. MLOs are strongly encouraged not to wait until the last minute to try to complete CE or they may be prevented from submitting for renewal on time.

Newly licensed MLOs are NOT required to complete CE this year if they completed PE and were approved for initial licensure this calendar year. If both apply, you can renew your license between November 1 and December 31 next year. Once you have completed your required CE:

  • Log in to NMLS and make sure your record is up to date

  • Receive a request to renew or reactivate your registration

  • Log in to NMLS and attest to your registration’s renewal or reactivation

California (DRE) Continuing Education Requirements

Every California-licensed MLO is required to complete 8 hours of NMLS-approved education annually.

California MLOs licensed by the DFPI must take 1 hour of California mortgage license law as their elective. California MLOs licensed by the DRE can take any 1-hour elective relating to mortgage topics. DRE or DFPI? Your California MLO license was either issued by the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) or the Department of Real Estate (DRE). Each has specific education requirements.
